GAS PRODUCTION UNITS (GPUs)

Gas Production Units (GPUs) are enclosed pieces of equipment that regulate well stream flow, pressure and temperature. GPUs separate the various components found in a natural gas stream. When natural gas is extracted from underground reservoirs, it often contains impurities and unwanted substances such as water, hydrocarbon liquids and inorganic gases. GPUs use a combination of separation and temperature adjustments to remove unwanted components and prepare gas for further processing, pipeline delivery or transport.

Indirect line heaters are utilized to maintain optimal temperatures. RBI GPUs use a firetube submerged in a glycol medium that transfers heat to a coil. The Indirect line heater stabilizes temperatures before pressure drops.

In this stage, the gas stream is passed through a 2 or 3 phase separator, where the bulk of the liquid hydrocarbons and water are removed.

Production Benefits

  • GPUs ensure that the natural gas extracted meets the required quality standards for transportation and consumption. By removing impurities and other unwanted substances, they improve the overall quality of the gas.

  • Additionally, GPUs help reduce emissions and waste generated during production, thus contributing to minimizing the environmental impact of natural gas extraction.

Gas Production Units FAQ

A Gas Production Unit (GPU) is an enclosed piece of production equipment that regulates well stream flow, pressure and temperature. GPUs separate the various components found in a natural gas stream, such as water, hydrocarbon liquids and inorganic gases, and prepare gas for further processing, pipeline delivery or transport.

RBI GPUs move the well stream through four integrated stages: an indirect line heater stabilizes temperature before pressure drops, a 2- or 3-phase separator removes bulk liquids, a metering system captures gas, oil and water volumes for production accounting, and a customized instrumentation and electrical (I&E) package monitors and controls the unit.

RBI GPUs feature two or three phase separation with separators typically ranging from 20″ to 42″ outside diameter. The indirect line heater is built to 12K specifications, separators and scrub pots are built to ASME Section VIII Div. 1 or 2, and all process piping is built to ASME B31.3.

RBI GPUs are used in flowback operations and both temporary and permanent production installations. An optional enclosed cabinet makes them well-suited for challenging operating environments, and modular and walk-in cabinet designs provide flexibility for a variety of site layouts.

RBI Gas Productions Units (GPUs) are installed across major U.S. producing basins and shale plays, including the Anadarko Basin (SCOOP, STACK), Permian Basin (Wolfcamp, Bone Spring, Spraberry), Williston Basin (Bakken), Appalachian Basin (Marcellus, Utica), DJ Basin (Niobrara), Powder River Basin (Turner, Niobrara), Eagle Ford, Haynesville/Bossier, Fort Worth Basin (Barnett), San Juan Basin and Uinta Basin.
